    Daphna Laurens

    Cover

Two minds that melt together into one designer, in order to design in the purest sense of the word. Purely intuitively ideas are being transformed into characteristic products; functionality follows automatically...or not at all.

By drawing a line or closing borders, by creating boundaries or setting up fences people believe they can create a certain level of safety. These divisions make curiosity turn into fear. Fear of the unknown. These objects aim to arouse that natural human quality, curiosity.

    Edhv

    Burner

Is known for its unconventional approach to projects. One that is multidisciplinary, and founded in thorough research. Allowing ideas the freedom to develop into concepts with a unique identity.

A mix of opposites. The destructive process forms the beauty of creation. Visual poetry. The inconceivable course leaves a fragile image of ashes behind. The thin line between force and vulnerability. The surprise of a logic consequence.

    Mieke Meijer

    Balance

Distils the essence from the unnoticed aesthetics of everyday objects. She transforms ideas into designs that strike the imagination at great length, which helps them retain their value.

An impossible balance at first sight. An asymmetric lamp you have to touch, whether you like to or not. To adjust it and switch it on and off. The will to use it must be stronger than the fear of disturbing the balance.

    Raw Color

    Cryptographer and Encoded Textiles

The sphere of work of this twosome can be caught in the triangle of graphic design, photography and material. Where color is always paramount. Relying on their personal antennas they create their own metaphorical language, by research and experiment.

A personal message is more and more often sent digitally. Intangible, floating in the air, only readable on a screen. The tenability is determined by the functioning of a machine. The pattern-generator translates words to a code. Printed on fabric the message becomes tangible. Invisible words, with a physical impact.

    Jetske Visser

    Soot

Uses her work to reveal the things that lie beneath the surface. She turns subjects that are rarely discussed into something tangible, from an awareness in which mankind and nature are paramount.

A collection of tools, inspired by the tradition of making ink and the contribution ink had in the development of mankind. Soot mainly consists of countless pure carbon molecules, building block of life and polluter in one. By exploring the borders of this pitch-black material new possibilities evoke. Tools to write history with.

    Jeroen Wand

    [Sic]: Lamp & Table

A lamp that originates from perfection and is shaped by transience. Constructed of immaculate paper and plaster, every touch will leave its mark. By applying the technique on wood, with this table, the circle of materials is closed. Apparently useless pieces of veneer remains are, just like the paper, pressed into a sturdy whole. A labour-intensive process that leads to an elegant visual language of forms with rough edges.

    Maurizio Montalti

    System Synthetics

This research-project focuses on the use of fungi to decompose plastics and turn them into bioethanol, thus allowing plastic materials re-entering the cycle of every existing thing. Plastic is a man-made material which has been largely affecting and continues increasingly infiltrating our ecosystem. Such phenomenon originates progressively critical consequences for all living creatures. The improvement of a fungal life-form, many of us look down upon, reveals its capacity in helping us facing the plastic-issue quest. Modern alchemy with a philosophical touch. A critical commentary to the design world and a confrontation with our prejudices.

    6:1

Once grabbed by a material or process she wants to unravel this to the bottom. The information that is revealed during this research forms the foundation of the stories behind the final product.

The production process of immaculate white porcelain is extremely damaging. One kilo is accompanied by six kilos of waste, the mining changes landscapes once and for all. Colour, texture and structure of the waste are the source of this ceramic series. The abundance and diversity of the residue create an extra dimension of beauty, always in a 6:1 proportion.

    Susana Camara Leret
    & Mike Thompson

    Aqua Vita

Susana is a designer with an interest in transdisciplinary research, whose work opens discussion on social and environmental matters. Mike explores both old and new technologies in order to expose fresh relationships between function and behaviour, questioning common codes of conduct. This is the first time they blend their visions.

Contrary to popular belief, urine is not waste but a biofluid rich in information, providing valuable insights into the metabolic state of an organism. Utilising the archival properties of urine in a visual diary, Aqua Vita maps our body's ever evolving ecosystem, proposing a new understanding of health as a dynamic, resilient system.

    Adrien Petrucci

    Reformed objects

His process transforms the object from serial and anonymous to unique and intimate. With this gesture, he introduces human deviance within the inert industrial material and shape. The personal handwriting he developed is the core of his design process.

We get more and more estranged from materials, their dynamics, craft and source. Our consumption of goods has been completely disconnected from these matters. Time has come to introduce rituals that refer to our various desires behind consumption: necessity, vanity, hedonism. An economy of sacrifices could be able to address these motivations. Sacrifice implies loss or destruction on behalf of creation. Our desires are to be attained by embracing this need of destruction.

    Paul Heijnen

    Dolomite Construction Table

Sees things as they ‘are’ and tries to find out what they ‘can be’. By making connections and playing with the properties of the materials. Creation a powerful product with simple solutions, a product that can account for itself.

The outside of a dug out piece of marble is rough, dirty and damaged. Useless, worthless trash. Or isn’t it? The contrast between mechanically beautiful and naturally repulsive forms the fundamental idea of this table. Different techniques make each tabletop unique. A set of legs completes it. From redundant to headstrong.

    UNTOUCHABLES
    RETOUCHED

“Almost unnoticed we have shaped a society without danger. Nevertheless things happen to us we can’t control. ‘Untouchables Retouched’ is a visual dialogue about re-balancing and re-valuating the beauty of vulnerability.” By conducting research and experiments the Invertuals have transposed the theme of vulnerability onto contemporary designs. Balance, delicacy, curiosity and transience were sources of inspiration.

Dutch Invertuals is a collective of individual designers who are always in search of the limits of their profession. They present pieces that reflect their contemporary viewpoints in images, objects, materials, insights and stories.
