A design exploration of the creative force of conflict
Conflict is part of everyday life. It appears in our routines, emotions, decisions, and relationships, often forcing us to question what we know and choose a direction. For the Dutch Invertuals exhibition during Dutch Design Week 2012, this friction became a force for renewal, a way of letting go of the old and making space for something new.
We are confronted by conflict on a daily base. It’s hidden in our daily routines and often exposes itself in many different emotions like: a dilemma, a doubt, a misconception, disgust, pain, regret and so on. But it is this energy that thrives us to push forward. It’s the constant getting rid of the old to replace with something new. It’s a mechanism that forces us to choose side and by doing so we keep in motion of renewal. New formats and points of view form along the way as we are being pushed into the future by the power of conflict.

Through research and experimentation, the Invertuals translated the theme of conflict into contemporary design. Chemical reactions, rotation-moulded experiments, unfinished constructions, handcraft and technical crafts, bone as a new material, colour science, and woven techniques became sources of inspiration or emerged as a result of conflict.
