Specimen
This year, Dutch Invertuals is excited to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Over the years, their work has adapted to reflect contemporary themes, transforming research into tangible products, spaces, and experiences.
Throughout these years, various topics have been explored, such as challenging perceptions of materiality and waste, addressing pressing issues like overconsumption and environmental impact, and investigating pathways to renewable energy. Through multidisciplinary projects that merge art, design, technology, and research, Dutch Invertuals has provided creative responses to raise awareness, find solutions, and initiate dialogue.
Dutch Invertuals reflects on its journey to inspire the future.
Collaborating with over 90 designers and various organisations, museums, and clients, Dutch Invertuals has embraced change as a constant. This evolution has transformed the collective into a multidisciplinary design studio that develops spatial and strategic design projects. Additionally, a foundation has been established to initiate annual research exploring emergent cultural, social, and political themes, alongside the academy, which connects young professionals globally with industry experts to foster skill development and career growth.
Over the years, Invertual’s design explorations have grown, utilising their archives to enrich new projects with knowledge and experience. As part of this anniversary celebration, Dutch Invertuals reflects on its journey to inspire the future.
15 designers, 1 chair
To mark this milestone, during the Dutch Design Week, Dutch Invertuals challenged its network to redesign a chair created for the 5TRACKS Offices interior. This project showcases each designer’s expertise, with the chair serving as a canvas for each personality.
Just as biologists collect specimens to understand organisms by examining their characteristics, Dutch Invertuals challenged 15 designers to each design a unique object, showcasing craft, skills, vision and creative expression, highlighting each designer’s own evolutionary process.
“Because of this collaboration we were able to turn the Di Mama Chair into something really unique, festive and personal”
